New Westminster High School built on Chinese Cemetery

I found this story disheartening. Turns out that a high school in New Westminster is built on a old Chinese Cemetery. Actually the high school sits on several cemeteries: http://www.theprovince.com/Cemeteries+under+high+school/1403962/story.html

"The school, which dates to 1948, is to be replaced. But when the school board began planning to add a middle school to the site and build a new high school, it discovered that part of the site had served as New Westminster’s public cemetery from 1861 to 1907.

Another portion, known as Douglas Cemetery, was used from 1907 to 1920. That meant part of the school property came under protection of the provincial Cemeteries Act. But other sections, used for two Chinese cemeteries, have no such protection."
http://www.theprovince.com/News/cemeteries+haunt+rebuilding+West+high+school/1403390/story.html
This is something I find very hard to comprehend. The high school sits on four cemeteries. Two fall under the protection of the Cemeteries Act but the two Chinese cemeteries for some strange reason do not.

This is the part that I cannot comprehend. If two of the cemeteries fall under the Cemeteries Act, all four do. Ignoring that fact is a violation of the Charter of Rights.

Do you know what tomb sweeping day is? It is a day set aside within the Chinese community to visit the graves of their ancestors to honour the sacrifices they have made and to clean the grave site. This is an honourable tradition. We would do well to embrace it and follow it. Chinese cemeteries are magnificent pieces of architecture.

My bewilderment is left to struggle trying to understand why this injustice exists in our own back yard. The Chinese people have a magnificent culture. They are organized and very hard working. They contribute greatly to our society. In Victoria one can visit the historical origins of China town during this time period. They were very organized and very industrious. A credit to the country.

Historically, the Chinese people have overcome oppression and hardship here. Chinese immigrants were used as slave labour to build the railway and many died. I have a friend in Vancouver who is a descendant of one of these railway workers. He doesn’t speak Cantonese or Mandarin, he speaks a different older dialect. He is a wonderful humble and good hearted man. A credit to the nation.

Racism is hard to comprehend at the best of times and shocking to find in our own country. Historically we had the Head tax and an Anti Asian League form:
http://www.theprovince.com/Chinese+Westminster/1403964/story.html
This would be the Canadian equivalent to the KKK. It is a shocking embarrassment to find in our closet.
Recognizing the injustices of the past, one small act that is within our power to repair is to recognize that all four Cemeteries under the New Westminster High School are protected under the Cemeteries Act. That would be one small step forward: http://www.fullofnews.ca/

Polygamy Strikes Again

You will note that the guy arguing in favor of polygamy is a sexual deviant. It kind of proves my point that no matter how holy of a calling you perceive polygamy to be, it attracts freaks and extremists like a magnet. I rest my case: http://finiansworld.blogspot.com/2008/10/polygamy.html

A Woman’s Right to Vote

A friend forwarded this story to me and I was outraged. I realize that it was not very long ago that woman gained the right to vote but it never really sunk in. 1920? That really is an embarrassment on society.
.
In Canada, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta granted woman the right to vote in 1916. Ontario and B.C. did in 1917 and the rest of Canadian did shortly thereafter except for Quebec who didn’t grant woman the right to vote until 1940. That is hard to conceive. http://faculty.marianopolis.edu/c.belanger/quebechistory/stats/WomensRighttovoteinCanada.html

What’s also hard to conceive is how these woman who marched on the White house asking for the right to vote were arrested and beaten in prison.

Lawful assembly is a fundamental right within the constitution. Being arrested and beaten for exercising that right is insane. It reminds me of how Bush vetoed the bill preventing CIA torture. Not only did they admit the CIA practices torture but George Bush went down in history as the one who vetoed the bill preventing it. That is shameful.

The problem rises with the definition of terrorist. Who is a terrorist? Is it someone who plans on murdering innocent civilians or is it simply someone who disagrees with me? Is it someone they randomly pick and torture until they get a bogus confession for their Operation Northwoods false flag treason?

These are who they called terrorist in 1920:
These women were innocent and defenseless, but they were jailed nonetheless for picketing the White House, carrying signs asking for the vote. And by the end of the night, they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden's blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of 'obstructing sidewalk traffic.'

(Lucy Burns)
They beat Lucy Burns, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night -- bleeding and gasping for air.

(Dora Lewis)
They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cellmate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack. Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women.
.
Thus unfolded the 'Night of Terror' on Nov. 15, 1917, when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote. For weeks, the women's only water came from an open pail. Their food--all of it colorless slop --infested with worms.
.
(Alice Paul)
When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press. http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/collections/suffrage/nwp/prisoners.pdf

HBO made a movie about the nightmare called Iron Jawed Angels:
Men beating women. How pathetic.
Saudi Arabia and Kuwait still deny women the right to vote:
If Iraq was allowed to invade Kuwait, would the Kuwaiti women have the right to vote then? Interesting to note that US’s two enemies, Iraq and Afghanistan both let women vote in elections but the US’s two close allies, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait are the only two countries left in the world that still don’t let women vote in elections. All hail the almighty dollar. http://www.merip.org/mero/mero021005.html

Polygamy

Let’s start off by clarifying that Warren Jeffs is not a Mormon nor does he represent the Mormon faith. He calls himself a Fundamentalist Mormon but that is very far from the truth. They started a new church, used the Mormon name (LDS) and added Fundamentalist to their name to break the copyright and create further confusion.

Nevertheless, it is so different form the real Mormon Church it should be called a different name. Mind you FLDS is a good name for them if the F stands for something other than Fundamentalist.

Thomas S. Monson is a Mormon and he does represent that faith. Before him it was Gordon B. Hinkley. You might have seen him on Larry King. Larry King married a Mormon although he did not convert himself.

I’m going to address Jeffs' polygamy and LDS polygamy in two separate categories because they are very different. Warren Jeffs is a wacko: http://www.cbc.ca/fifth/bustupinbountiful/

Not long ago there was a polygamous compound in Texas raided. Jeffs' compound in Bountiful Utah, the one in Idaho as well as the polygamist compound in Creston, B.C. are all connected.

The abominable thing about the practice is the way they do it. Arranged marriages, forced marriages and marriages of very young girls to very old men is wrong. Very wrong. The three American groups love Canada because in Canada the age of consent is or was 14. That way an old man could marry a 14 year old girl, have sex with her and the law could do nothing to stop it. I think the intent of the law was age of consent between two 14 year olds not a 14 year old girl and a 44 year old man. Nevertheless, I think it’s finally been bumped back up to 16 in Canada.

There are a lot of other things wrong with these four compounds that make them very extreme and different from Mormons. Mitt Romney is a Mormon although he is not the leader of the church just a member of the church. I was less than thrilled when he mocked Hillary Clinton’s desire for affordable health care. Ezra Taft Benson was another Mormon who was a leader of the church and involved in American politics. He wrote a very interesting book called "An Enemy Hath Done this" which I will site later.

Mormon polygamy I’m hesitant to touch with a ten foot pole. Yes at one time the Mormon Church practiced and taught polygamy. Claiming it as part of their religious beliefs they went to jail and appealed the matter to the U.S. Supreme Court and lost.

The Supreme Court first ruled that the State could in fact create a law that prohibits polygamy if it chose to do so but they could not confiscate all that church’s property and belongings as a consequence for breaking that law. However it appears that in the end the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Edmunds-Tucker Act was constitutional, and that the federal government could repeal the LDS church charter and dissolve the church. http://www.religioustolerance.org/lds_poly.htm

Since Mormons believe in honoring and sustaining the law, they caved in and stopped the practice. Some, refusing to respect the leaders of the church broke away and kept on practicing it in a very unsanctioned manner. The book of Mormon speaks out clearly against the unauthorized practice of polygamy calling it an abomination.

Personally, I’d go to jail for someone’s right to be Catholic or their right to be Muslim, Jewish or their right to be Atheist. However, I wouldn't go to jail for someone’s right to practice polygamy. That is not something I want to go down in history as fighting for. Polygamy is always problematic. It’s not always abusive but it is always problematic.

Biblically, Jacob was tricked into polygamy. He made a deal with Rachel’s father to work for him seven years for the right to marry his daughter. When the seven years was up, Rachel’s father said he could marry Rachel but he couldn’t let his younger daughter get married before his older daughter gets married. He said if he married Rachel’s older sister Leah and worked for him another seven years, he could then marry the woman he originally wanted to marry. Strange and problematic, that is the historical origin of the 12 tribes of Israel. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacob

Abraham, Jacob’s grandfather was a polygamist. Abraham married Sarah but Sarah couldn’t have children so Sarah suggested Abraham marry her handmaiden so they could have a child. Then after it was done, human nature took over and Sarah became jealous.

David and Solomon both were polygamists yet both got completely carried away and had many concubines that were not authorized. The movie the King and I is another example of polygamy. I’m told some Muslims practice polygamy.

Anyways just because it was done in the past doesn’t make it right. I could go on for days about my concerns about the problematic nature of polygamy and strange diversions of the practice. Suffice it to say that I have a problem with it and Mormons do not practice it today.

Gordon B. Hinkley was not a polygamist. Before he died and shortly after his wife passed away I remember hearing him talk about his wife. He said he married the woman of his dreams and now that she has passed on she has once again become the woman of his dreams. How can you get mad at a guy like that? I have a great deal of respect for Gordon B. Hinkley.

Nevertheless, the doctrine still exists and many believe the day will come when polygamy will be reintroduced. Isaiah talks about the day when seven women will cleave unto one man. The way I see it is a man has an affair on his wife and then brings that affair home to live in the same house. That is the only way I can see it.

I find it hard to believe that many who did practice polygamy in the early days of the church said they did not want to originally and would have rather died than live that law. I find that hard to believe when I see how eagerly they embraced the practice. Hyrum certainly wasn’t candid with his feelings about the practice. It was like a kid in a candy store. I have a hard time with terms like "I preached to her the doctrine of polygamy and she embraced it." This is why many good people turn away and many wackos are drawn like a magnet secretly hoping to one day live the polygamy dream so to speak. For me that is not a dream, it's a nightmare.

Dee Henderson

This is an example of American extremism. Dee Henderson was in a car accident and suffered from migraines. Her private insurance company said she had to apply for social security before they would approve her claim, which she did. All private insurance companies want to avoid paying claims since they are mandated to make a profit.

Dee was eventually approved for social security. She did not say she could not work. She said she couldn’t maintain gainful employment because her migraines were sporadic which made her attendance unreliable. Years later she ends up winning a beauty contest.

Insurance scalpers follow her around and see her wave to the crowd in a beauty contest and deem her fit for employment and deny her claim. She was also seen in a bathing suit at the beach wading in ankle deep water with her children. Hardly vigorous physical activity.

Nevertheless, Dee Henderson was not only cut off disability, she was thrown in jail for committing fraud. What? I’m serious. She had a little girl in tears as a good mother was being torn from the home, again.

I say this is extreme. If the private insurance company’s witch doctors deemed her fit for employment then they should simply have cut her off disability benefits. Throwing her in jail for fraud was extreme.

Abortion's Wish

This is the reason the world was stuck with an idiot for president two times running and why we might get another idiot third time unlucky.

Abortion is a pretty passionate issue. Most people are dead set in their way and debating the issue will not sway one person from one side to the other. As a result many Americans see elections as one issue and vote solely base on the politician’s position on abortion.

Abortion stops a beating heart. That fact is not debatable. Yet intolerance and extremism plague both sides of the debate. Personally I am against abortion. I think abortion on demand as a form of birth control is utter irresponsibility. Tubule pregnancies is a different matter. They are automatically aborted as are any other cases when the life of the mother is threatened.

Abortion after the first trimester is simply archaic. Inducing labour and killing the baby with a saline injection is just plain evil. What’s the difference between that and putting a newborn in a dumpster or leaving your baby to die of exposure on a hill because it was born deformed. In some ways modern man has not evolved at all: http://clcbc.org/clinic/whsc1.html

Obviously in cases of incest or rape that is an extenuating circumstance and difficult choices have to be made. Personally I think adoption is the answer to abortion but I don’t have to go through labour nor do I have to face medical expenses in the United States. Surely pro-life activists will also be for affordable medical insurance. Telling someone they can’t have an abortion while you refuse to subsidize medical expense is somewhat counter productive.

Some pro-choice advocates oppose abortion after the first trimester. Many don’t. To me there is a difference although we don’t have to watch the movie of an abortion called the silent scream to realize that at 6 weeks a beating heart has already been formed. 8 weeks the baby looks like a baby.

I had one friend who wanted to have children but couldn’t and really regretted having an abortion when she was young. She said she still had nightmares of pieces of cut up fetus screaming. Wow, I thought. They don’t tell those stories at pro-choice rallies: http://www.abortionconcern.org/stories/index.php?storytype=late

Nevertheless, we all make mistakes and forgiveness is always possible. I’m not talking about being forgiven by God. I’m talking about being able to forgive ourselves. Many say how carrying a baby full term then giving it up for adoption is a very hard thing to do. Some mothers who give up their child for adoption latter on have second thoughts and change their mind.

Many children given up for adoption seek out their biological parents and ask them why they were given up for adoption. That would be uncomfortable. As would meeting the baby one aborted and have to answer the question why you didn’t want them but also why you didn’t give them a chance at life so someone else could love them. Feeling that pain would be somewhat uncomfortable.

What’s the saying. An once of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Birth control is the responsible choice for someone who wants to have sexual relations but doesn’t want to have children. Abstinence is wishful thinking. Happy Birthday: http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=Mr_90kFinvc&feature=related
