Olympic Criticism

Interesting that pulling off such a huge event comes with such huge and Olympic sized criticism from every person and their dog sitting on their ass whining and complaining about everything under the sun. The negative pessimism is contagious like a bad STD.

People, nothing in this world is perfect. We have good and bad. We have good people who make simple mistakes, we have bad people determined to make everyone as miserable as they are and we have bad people who have good in them.

It is so much easier to tear a bridge down then it is to build one up. People who sit on their ass and complain about everything under the sun really irritate me. Yes putting a chain link fence around the Olympic cauldron in Vancouver wasn't the smartest thing for tourists who wanted to take pictures. But lets remember the spoilt brat wackos we have been bending over backwards to accommodate who covet the opportunity to douse the Olympic cauldron with fire extinguishers.

Putting a chain link fence around the cauldron was a necessity because of all the wackos who want to vandalize it. If there was no fence and if there was an army of riot police protecting the flame 24 hours a day people would still complain about budget costs. Yes Plexiglas would have been better and yes they are working on it to fix it which will cost more money which the people will still complain about. Stone Henge in England is fenced off to protect and preserve it.

But to all you reporters who are sitting on your ass getting paid to blog and sensationalize the negative FUCK Off. Open your fucking eyes and use your brain for one minute. There are over 25 thousand volunteers taking time off their regular jobs and are working very hard to make the games a success within budget. They are walking the walk not just talking the talk. They are actively doing something positive and are clearly part of the solution. Three cheers for the volunteers.

How dare you forget them and minimize their sacrifice and hard work by complaining about everything under the sun. Get a life. Get off your ass and do something positive. That does not include putting on a mask and vandalizing things or assaulting people. That only proves you are a criminal as well as an idiot.

I was never really a fan of the Olympics but I have become one. I am thrilled to see so many people working so hard putting in so many hours to make this event a success. There is an Olympian effort of an army of workforce doing their best and getting shit on at every opportunity. When people keep getting shit on they quit. That is a natural consequence. Then the assholes who made them quit will have even more to complain about.

The IOC is far from perfect. Yes it has become commercialized and bureaucratic and yes that has trickled down to VANOC who's arrogance and unorganization have been a thorn in the side of the many people trying to make this event work but the origin of the games was one of international peace. Getting countries together who might normally be at war to lay their differences aside and compete in healthy peaceful competitions instead of slaughtering each other on the battlefield.

Now we have idiots sitting on their ass talking shit. The only difference is they aren't bureaucrats, they are the peanut galley. How small minded indeed.

Remember there is a 6 bil $ pricetag to these games, especially during a down economy people are going to complain about all the glitches. And you may like the games now, but will probably not be so happy about them a year from now. Look at Greece. Enjoy what you can of them while they're here I guess, you'll b paying for them for a long time to come.

Oh and the complaints have nothing to do with people sitting on their asses, anyone can see the glaring mistakes and terrible planning that went into the games.

Actually it has everything to do with people sitting on their ass complaining about everything under the sun. That was my point. Yes it costs a lot of money. That’s why I would have voted no had I been allowed to vote. The point is a referendum has held and the majority of the people in Vancouver voted yes to hold the games. That is democracy.

We have seen from Sydney and Salt Lake that corruption has entered the IOC. Yet the spirit of the games is a good thing and a lot of people are working very hard overcoming obstacles including the volunteers instead of sitting on their ass complaining.

Just one little point that I've been really irked about: so many people bring up the economy. That argurment is spurious. The Olympics were set for Vancouver 7 years ago. We invited the world long before "Fanny Mae" and "Lehman Brothers" became household worlds around the globe. Bad economy or not, we were always going to host these games.

Indeed. The economic downturn was tragic but the games were planned long before that happened. Those complaints are from the same people who complained the government didn’t spend enough on economic stimulus. Some people will complain no matter what you do.

When you talk about the olympics OF COURSE economics are relevent. The games are always sold on the promise of economic growth when the opposite is historically true. Massive debt is acured and often doesn't go away. Case point with Greece - they've been in debt since the games and now with the economic collapse that debt is really affecting them.

Montreal never paid off their debt but during good economic times was 'forgiven.' What is the future for Vancouver?

So naturally with a depressing outlook people are looking at these poorly managed and more or less universally derided (worldwide) games and complaining.

Again this has nothing to do with people 'sitting on their asses' and everything to do with money poorly spent on a badly planned and executed 6 billion dollar event.

It's nice that people are volunteering to try and make the best of it - I doubt many people are angry at the volunteers. Unfortunately the issues extend far beyond their reach to fix.

Montreal had a bad financial experience with their Olympics. No doubt. Vancouver had a vote and the democratic will of the people was to host the games. So what’s your point? Do away with democracy? That's what it sounds like to me.

A few hundred thousand (also being the people mostly likely to profit from the games) are eligible to vote on something that will affect the entire province? At the end of the day 64% were in favor of the bid. A fairly slim margin, particularly when you condsider what likely wouldve happened if other areas of the city had been eligible to vote. This is selective democracy at best.

Not to mention the games were sold on various promises which have yet to materialize by this Liberal government.

At this point I figure try to take what you can enjoy out of this 6 billion dollar party but complain loudly of how poorly the government, vanoc and IOC spent your money.

One point I think of to illustrate the entire scope of how this was handled is the ripped off native sweaters manufactured in China being sold for 350$ competing with the genuine sweaters sold by native bc artists for 400$. If you don't know what I'm talking about look it up, it's pathetic.

The one glimmer in all of this is the beautiful weather showing off our great city and mostly wonderful inhabitants. This of course has nothing to do with the poorly managed games, but inevitably it will be used by vanoc to try and scapegate the mounting criticism.

It was a city wide referendum held by Larry Campbell. It could well have been province wide but it wasn’t as Larry Campbell was mayor of Vancouver at the time and a province wide referendum would have been out of his jurisdiction. Larry Campbell did the right thing. No one believes a word that comes out of Gordon Campbell mouth. He is a liar and an idiot. His reelection is a stain on all of us.

Yet the bottom line is a referendum was held and the Olympic Whiner Committee is trying to thwart democracy.
