Privatized Prisons

This is another example of American extremism. Why on earth would you want a prison mandated to make a profit? Where does it stop? A private police force? No public services that are accountable to the public? How can you maintain public accountability if you privatize everything?

Privatizing everything has not helped the American economy:

Some of this started with President Ronald Regan who thought private industry could do things more efficiently than government. Although this is sometimes true, he forgot that private industry is in it to make a profit. The idea of private prisons receives increasing scrutiny and criticism in the United States.

Yeah I just found out about them. It’s something I’d joke about never thinking they’d actually do it. Privatized prisons have no incentive to reduce over crowding because they make more money when the prisons are full. I don’t think prisons should be club meds but not controlling the violence in the prisons is counter productive.

Prisons were supposed to be mandated to strive to rehabilitate. A private prison has no incentive to rehabilitate since that requires extra effort and losing a slave labourer is losing money. Privatizing everything is unwise. Some services should be publicly accountable.
